How can it be that the flagship store of a technology company looks like a public art institution, while the Louvre’s new satellite in Nord-Pas-de-Calais makes visitors feel like they had entered the user interface of an iPad? This article investigates the Louvre Lens with respect to the striking similarities of the formal language regarding material, structure and atmosphere it shows to Apple stores. By this, the article aims to analyze cultural codes and to interpret buildings as manifestations of a peculiar contemporary mentality, which seems to be a mentality that sees the world as a symbolic system.
