Abstract:
Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems (IVSS) are expected to make road traffic considerably safer, cleaner and more
efficient. Therefore, the European Commission is engage
d to support the market deployment and penetration of
these systems. A base requirement for such an
enhancement strategy is the socio-economic impact assessment of
IVSS. The selected case studies for applying cost-benefit appraisals are eCall, Safe Following (ACC) and a com-
bined Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Change Assistance (LCA). The applied appraisal method is cost-
benefit analysis. The assessment is carried out on EU-25
basis for the target years 2010 and 2020. The benefits
comprise savings of accident costs and accident caused congestion costs. The results show all over benefit-cost
results higher than 1, i.e. the benefits exceed the costs. With that, the profitability of the IVSS introduction is
proven on society level.
