Gender effects and inter-individual differences in map-aided route-following

Description of the project:
Route-following with maps provides an interesting test-bed for inter-individual differences and gender effects. Nonetheless, research does not yet provide a clear picture concerning the precise sources of differences between individuals and genders in such tasks. In this strategic project, we aim at investigating these differences in a novel way by using diagnostic tasks to identify sources of difficulty on the individual level. The findings will then be used to implement a cognitive model that explains and predicts individual errors based on shortcomings in basic map-related skills. As a long-term perspective the project aims at training navigators to optimize their map use and strategies for error recovery.
