Landscape and black grouse

Description of the project:
The dissertation project investigates large scale spatial- patterns as well as temporal changes in the cultural landscape of lowland Central Europe as correlates of bird species abundances and distributions. The objective of the study is to provide insight into the factors determining decline and extinction of species like the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix), being widespread in former times but nowadays inhabiting remnants of semi-natural areas in a matrix of intensive land use. Therefore mainly published data is analysed in relation to landscape patterns and land use data obtained from remote sensing, GIS and public databases. By comparing the results from different sites, spatial scales and points in time, the question shall be answered whether rare bird species can be maintained against the background of contemporary agricul-tural schemes, on a large scale.
