Climate archives of the Southern Andes: A key to understanding global effects
Description of the project:
In this project which is coordinated by Prof. Dr.
Rolf Kilian, University of Trier, various environmental and climate archives in southwestern Patagonia are investigated with regard to their potential for the reconstruction of postglacial climate conditions. Besides dendrochronological analyses of tree-ring sequences, lake sediments and turf archives are analysed. Stem discs of Pilgerodendron uviferum, Nothofagus betuloides, N. antarctica and N.
pumilio were taken along an east-west transect in the southern Andean foothills of Chile. These were measured in tree-ring laboratory of the Chair of Forest Growth. In the study area, a dendroecological field measurement station is operated where among other measurements the stem growth of Pilgerodendron uviferum is registered with electronic point dendrometers. The goal is to elucidate the relationships between the tree-ring development and the environmental conditions in this super-humid location. The Chair of Forest Growth is involved in the statistical analyses of the dendro-time series.
