Measures to increase the adaptability of beech forests to the predicted climate change
Description of the project:
European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the most abundant broad-leaved forest tree species in Central Europe. With the projected changes in climate the stability of beech is controversially discussed. It is expected that due to its drought sensitivity to summer stress, a loss in vitality and productivity on beech stands at the limit of its distribution area will be registered, and its competitiveness will decrease in the favour of other tree species like oak.
The objective of this study is to develop operational concepts of stand management for enhancing the resilience and adaptability of beech forests to the changing climatic conditions, especially to summer drought, taking into account environmental and economical aspects.
