Conceptions of Medieval Thought (COMETH)

Projektbeschreibung:
COMETH is a tri-national research group dedicated to the cross-cultural phenomenon of “conceptions of medieval thought” (COMETH): i.e., the fact that both in the Latin and Arabic Middle Ages philosophers not only developed concepts and theories, but also reflected upon and categorized their philosophical activities. While they thus created their own narratives and constructions of the history of philosophy as well as what they considered to be contemporary philosophy, this view was refracted once more through the lens of modernity when, for largely different purposes, the history of philosophy was re-narrated and re-constructed by Western historiography. Together with a number of invited scholars, COMETH is currently working on the production of a volume exploring these perspectives and refractions by focusing on the role played by the twin concept of language and method (tentative title: Langage et méthode: Réflexions historiques et historiographiques sur la pensée médiévale).
