King George Island Expert GIS (KGIXGIS)

Description of the project:
The KGIXGIS (King George Island Expert GIS) provides a Spatial Decision Support System for environmental protection and research activities for King George Island, Antarctica. The ice-free areas and coastal zones of the island carry a diverse plant and animal life. Penguins, seals, petrels and a comparable rich vegetation make the island's natural environment not only a favourite for tourist cruises. King George Island has also the greatest concentration of multinational research activities in Antarctica. The manifold human activities lead to severe impacts on the vulnerable ecosystems of the island. To minimise the pressure on the ecosystems co-ordination and regulation of the activities is a necessity. In the KGIXGIS the SDSS is realised by combining a GIS with a rulebased expert system. While the GIS manages the spatial data the expert system handles knowledge about the use of the spatial data.
