Petahertz field reconstruction for the investigation of ultrafast electronic dynamics

The light-matter interaction is governed by the electronic structure and properties of the medium and
by the characteristics of the electromagnetic field. In a general way, a light pulse exerts a force on the
electrons residing in the material determining different phenomena such as polarization in a dielectric
(due to linear and nonlinear non-resonant responses of the bound electrons), screening in a metal
(due to the high mobility of free electrons), and absorption (or emission) of energy (due to the presence
of transitions resonant with the pulse photon energy). ...
