Synergies from an Integrated Renewable Energy Supply and Storage System in the Upper Rhine Region: An Interdisciplinary Analysis (SIRES_URR)

Projektbeschreibung:
Cooperation at EU and international level will be needed to accelerate the transition to a modern, low-carbon and secure energy supply. In this context, a number of key enabling factors have been identified, including measures for new cross-border energy infrastructure, a reliable legal framework for international energy relations, economic adaptations as well as sociocultural understanding. Barriers to increased efficiency and flexibility in the supply and storage of Renewable Energy (RE) are related to technical, economic, legal and sociocultural issues. There is a need for policy-makers to understand these issues in order to develop tools to use and increase the synergy potentials of RE regions. The goal of this project is to develop a model of the URR as a cross-border RE region and using an interdisciplinary approach, to analyse the frame conditions for increased efficiency and flexibility in RE production, distribution and buffering in the URR, with a view to reaping RE potentials and developing concepts for increased coherence energy policies and markets. In particular, the analysis will help to identify the benefits and downsides of URR as a cross-border RE region, to develop ideas on its successful implementation, and to support the further development of RE markets.
