Jena Experiment: SP 7: Context-dependence of biodiversity effects and real-world perspective

Projektbeschreibung:
Ecological systems are highly variable in both time and space. Coupled with the local and small-scale nature of most historic research, this has hampered progress towards the discovery of general ecological relationships. Synthesis of data and knowledge allows these hurdles to be overcome and for general patterns to be identified. The emerging field of ‘ecological synthesis’ shows enormous promise in delivering an ecological science that is both general and robust. The Jena Experiment offers a unique opportunity for synthesis, in particular of the relationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and ecosystem services, as data of various processes, ranging from species occurrences to interactions and to element cycling, have been and are collected for many plots in stringent experimental designs, in a standardised way, and over long periods. The quality of the data from the Jena Experiment is especially high because, from the very beginning, data gathering in the Jena Experiment was guided by central projects which ensured compliance with experimental design, sampling location and required replication. Similar efforts in “real world” (i.e. semi-natural and agricultural grassland ecosystems) grassland studies are scarce, typically because far fewer variables are measured and logistical constraints do not allow sufficient replication. Notable exceptions to this are (i) the temporary grasslands of the COST Action 852 project, where legume-grass forage systems of varying diversity were established in 33 European sites (Kirwan et al. 2007), and (ii) the permanent grasslands of the Biodiversity Exploratories (Fischer et al. 2010) in Germany, where data similar in scope and quality to those obtained in the Jena Experiment have been compiled since 2007 for 150 grasslands that differ in their land use intensity, plant diversity and plant composition (Allan et al. 2015).
